CD Cup Stand
I was always worried about what to do with old or unnecessary CDs. And
once there were several corks of champagne bottles left after one celebration
at my work. And the idea has come to my mind — to make a stand
for my tea cup for my working table. Here is the result.

How Did I Make It |
|
To make the stand was easy. The only tool I used was a hack-saw —
to make gashes on the corks for the CDs.
The deepness of the gashes is about half of the diameter of the cork.
As a result, there is a cork with two gashes.
In my case it was not necessary to use any glue to fix the disks in the
gashes of the corks because they were stuck tightly enough.

The Theory |
|
There was one more reason not to use the glue. As the disks are not fixed
in the corks forever, it is possible to replace them from time to time.
I used two disks because the construction with only one disk is not hard
enough. Actually it may be interesting to use three disks or more...
The number of corks was chosen equal to three because it makes the whole
construction stable and hard enough. Using more then three corks requires
more precise notching of the corks to eliminate swinging.

Possible Variations |
|
Actually, there are lots of possible enhancements for this product. For
example, the corks may be replaced by the turned legs, made of aluminum
or stainless steel. And the CDs may be replaced by the disks of the real
glass.
It is also possible to install a LEDs between the disks and make the
cup stand lighting. Good idea is to use a computer as a power supply and
connect the cup stand via USB connector. May be interesting to make the
behavior of the LEDs dependable on the fact of presence of the cup on
the stand. For example, when you put the cup on the stand, the LEDs start
to blink.
Small heating spiral may be added to keep the beverages warm, while the
cup is on the stand.

But my primary objective was to make something useful
of the stuff that is usually thrown away. |
